Sometimes, you may face tooth problems like swelling and pain, which may need root canal treatment. Now, the question is how do you ascertain yourself whether you need this treatment without consulting any of the dentists. Even if you visit a dental clinic, the doctor has to evaluate the information from number of sources.
Also, at the same time there are few signs and symptoms that most of us are quite familiar with. Some of the symptoms will however be noticed only by your dentist. The symptom that you can notice yourself is that you may feel little discomfort or swelling, which will signal you that there must be some problem with your tooth. The dentist will also ask you number of questions to evaluate your condition. Let us discuss about the symptoms that you would be able to notice by yourself.
Pain
Some of the tooth problems, which require endodontic therapy, may not give you any pain. However, in case you feel the pain then you may experience any one or more than one of the following signs.
- Your discomfort level may be either too little or it may be severe.
- Your pain may slightly change as you stand or sit or when you bend.
- You may feel the soreness when you are biting or chewing on something with pressure. Also, it may occur while you either press or tap on the teeth that has the problem.
- You may also feel the pain when you are exposed to any hot or cold food. Sometimes you may feel the sting due to heat and get relief when any cold liquid or ice is applied on the affected area.
- In some cases, you may feel the pain only for some time and then it fades away. However, at times it may continue for hours.
- Pain is so much that you wake up from your sleep.
- You may feel the throbbing pain on certain side of your mouth, but you cannot exactly pinpoint the tooth that has problem.
Swelling
- Swelling can be slight or in some cases it may be too pronounced, which you can see by yourself.
- If the swelling is not that big and restricted to some location, you can identify the root of the teeth.
- Sometimes because of swelling you may feel that some of your tooth has become slightly elevated.
- Swelling may flare up so much that your face and neck will also swell.
- You may notice pus formation in your gum along with inflammation.
Identify the cause of inflammation
Following are two different symptoms that will help you to identify the cause of the swelling:
- If the swelling is due to gum disease then it will be located in the area where your tooth and gum meets.
- If the inflammation is due to infected nerve tissue of the tooth then the swelling will be little away from your tooth’s root tip.
